Dewey Break Out Session
Hello Everyone,
During this lesson, I must say that I was challenged a lot. I wasn't sure what I was doing and knew it would be a process of trial and error.
I first had to decide who I wanted to provide this breakout session for and the topic of the breakout session. I opted for an upper elementary audience and decided to choose a topic that is relevant in library skills. The Dewey Decimal System. I wanted to be able to break down the Dewey Decimal System lesson in to fragments because it would allow students to fully comprehend the topic in a fun and motivational way. The most challenging part of this assignment was creating break out session that would not be too easy but also not to overly complicated for 4th-5th graders. At times I found myself making it a lot more difficult than what it needed to be.
I first opted for 4th-5th graders because by that age most of them know or at least have heard of the Dewey Decimal System. I also must mention that these three breakout sessions are to be given towards the end of the Dewey Decimal System Unit or at least after they have had an introduction to it.
The three breakout sessions I chose were a crossword puzzle, task cards, and a scavenger hunt. The crossword puzzle will help students identify subjects in each Dewey category by answering the crossword puzzle correctly. Below you may see the example I created on the crossword labs website; by either clicking the link or image below.
Dewey Decimal
System Breakout Session Unit Plan
Topic of Lesson: Dewey Decimal System
Grade: 4th-5th Grade
Day 1-2: Dewey Crossword Puzzle
Objective: Students learned the Dewey Decimal System
in 3rd Grade. Students will complete a Dewey Decimal Crossword Puzzle by
working with a partner and defining each Dewey Decimal section. For example, #5
Across: Chinese. The answer would be Language (Category 400-499). Teacher will
provide this as an example. So, students are aware that each number is related
to a Dewey Category.
Materials: Pencil and Paper (working with Partner)
Introduction (5 minutes) : Teacher will re-introduce
Dewey Decimal System to students with a Dewey Decimal System Breakout Session.
A Dewey Decimal System Crossword Puzzle. Teacher will go over the 9 categories
(General, Language, Literature…etc). It will provide a refresher to students to
understand prior to beginning the breakout session. The teacher will select partners for students
and have them begin working with their partner.
Lesson Procedure: (10 minutes) The teacher will
provide each student with a partner and have everyone work with their partner
to answer the crossword puzzle. Students may not work with anyone else besides
their partner. Students will be assigned an area in the library by number.
In doing so, students will not engage or get distracted by
other students. Students will work with a partner to decide or answer the
crossword puzzle. If they do not now the answer or the category number; then
they are more than welcome to leave answer blank.
Wrap of Lesson (5 minutes): After each pair of
students has competed the crossword puzzle. I will collect all worksheets and
have them turn it in as an exit slip for the day. I will inform each student to
hand me their puzzle and they may begin to enter the library for check out of
materials and read quietly or work in makerspace for the remainder of library.
Check Out/Exit (10 minutes): Students will check
out/renew library materials to take home or work in maker space quietly.
Day 2-3: Dewey Task Cards
Objective: Students completed a Dewey Decimal System
Crossword the day prior. On Day 2
students will answer a Dewey Task Card on their Chromebooks. The teacher will
share the Dewey Task Cards via Google Classroom and Slides. Students will answer questions such as “Jimmy
has watched the show Chopped on TV and became fascinated with cooking.
Help Jimmy find a book in the library about cooking. What Dewey Decimal System
Category will he find a book about cooking?”.
Students with their partner will then type their answer such as “600-699
Technology”.
Materials: Chromebooks and Google Classroom
(Technology) if they have technical issues. Students will answer worksheet
packets of Task Cards.
Introduction: (5 minutes) Teacher will remind
students of the lesson prior which was the crossword puzzle. The teacher will then introduce the Dewey
Task Cards that will help them have real life examples of why learning the
categories is important. The teacher will tell students to work with their
partners once more and during this lesson they will have 1 minute to answer the
question on their task card. Teacher
will share Google Classroom Link and provide students with the Task Cards
digitally.
Lesson Procedure (15 minutes): Students will log into
Chromebook and join Google Classroom link.
Students will then work with their partner and answer each question
accordingly. Students will have 1 minute
to answer the question and enter it in the Chromebook.
Students in this lesson will also have assigned areas in the
library to work on with their partner.
This will allow them to not get distracted and engaged in the
lesson. Students will not be able to
leave answer blank. They will need to provide a category number in the Dewey
Decimal System.
Wrap of Lesson ( 3 minutes): After the majority of
questions have been answered. I will inform students that they only have 3
minutes to submit all their answers.
Students will then be informed that they will have approximately 8
minutes to use the self-check out system to check out and read. Submission of task cards will be their exit
slip for the day.
Check Out/Exit (8 minutes): Students will check out
and read quietly while other students continue to finish their work.
Day 3-4: Digital Dewey Scavenger Hunt

and task cards based on the Dewey Decimal System. Students will continue to work with partners

the library can you find an Edgar Allen Poe Poem?”. Students will then answer “800-899

then get a map to escape the desert island.
Questions such as these will continue and will be available to them via
Google Classroom and shared in their Chromebook.

(Technology) . If Technology fails then students will be able to answer the
scavenger hunt via worksheet packet to be able to escape the island and find
the hidden treasure.
Introduction 5 minutes: The teacher will re-introduce
the Dewey Decimal System from the crossword puzzle and the Dewey Task Card
assignments. The teacher will then mention the digital scavenger hunt and
students will continue to work with their same partners. It will help them understand if they missed
answers from the previous assignments and what they need to work on. Students
will log in their Google Classroom and the teacher will share the classroom
link and students will need to type the correct answer in order to continue the
scavenger hunt. If not the computer will alert them with “Game Over”.

to their chromebooks and will answer each questions. If correct the game will
continue if the answer is incorrect then an alert will pop up saying “Game
